Blog 1

After many slide shows, this picture took my pick for many reasons. At first in general, it just caught my eye so I decided to figure why it caught my eye and why it is such a good picture.
First off, the position on which this picture was taken sets up everything else that could be said as good qualities of this picture. If the picture was taken straight on at standing position or higher up pointing down, it would not have produced this result.
Looking at colors, there are two colors that pop. The reddish property of the basketball and the green wall on the right. Why do these two pop out? Because they have great contrast. Red and green are opposite on the color wheel making that contrast to our eye. Not many times I think, that it is easy to produce a shot in action that pops two contrasting colors that really brings attention upon the image.
Because it is an action shot, setting up and taking the shot from the chosen side made the motion go to the right which by instinct makes us think it is going faster.
As far as lines go, the vertical lines seem to all lean in toward the main subject of the picture, the basketball. Because of this I think this is how it grabbed my attention because it made me feel like everything was being sucked toward the basketball. Also a big note of the vertical lines is that they seem to point upward toward the sky.
This image also is appealing because it has a sense of tease. It teases because it looks like the basketball is in a position to go into the basket which we all think is satisfying.
Most of all, this image has a upward focus toward the sky and an important object of remembrance behind the action. Not only does this picture have the great visual characteristics but it kind tells a story through it all. The twin towers behind sets up the story line.
