Manovich goes from saying how the most famous global brands were things that were tangible, but now it's intangible things like search engines, or popular web sites. I think this is very true and just goes along with tecnology advancing. Where we once had to drive to a store to buy something, we can now just Google it, or eBay it and have it shipped directly to us! In one hand, this makes it really good for us consumers because if we couldn't find what we were looking for locally, we can just jump onto a computer and order it. But that also on the other hand eliminates all social contact you would have encountered and makes it very impersonal. So I think this is a huge new advance that will stick around for a long time.
The people who invented computational media were J.C. Liicklider, Ivan Sutherland, Ted Nelson, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, Nicholas Negroponte. We don't know that much about them because I think that since computers and technology is so widely availible to us that we don't feel like we need to understand how it came about. We don't need to learn about them to log onto a computer and start working on things. It's kind of like 'out of sight, out of mind' I think. It would be nice to know how and where all of these programs came from and to get a better understanding of them, but that takes time, and I know for a lot of people, it feels like most days we just don't have enough time. So unless they start making this a required learning course in school, I don't think we will learn about.
