My collage represents my trip to Greece over the summer. Going over there was extremely interesting for me because Greece has so much history and culture that it is hard not to get lost in it. My favorite part about the culture over there was the mythology, so that is what I wanted to focus on here.I wanted to start on the left with the idea of mythology simply being stories. The girl on the swing represented to me the romanticism of it all. I made her a purple color with some red hues in it to keep her looking sweet and innocent, while still drawing a little bit of attention to her with the red. Since human eyes are drawn to red tones I thought this shade would be a good one to accomplish both of those things. I also decided to put this image toward the upper left side of the page because I wanted her to be pulled in that direction to help create the illusion that she really is swinging and thinking of myths. The image above the girl is of Homer's Illiad. It is suppose to be a romantic story about the fall of Troy. I put it above her to kind of represent how myths are more thoughts and stories than fact. The image below her is of the Keystone in the Lion's Gate at the Palace of Mycenae. This is something I got to see personally so I wanted to include it in my collage. The palace where this is from is also surrounded in myth because it is supposedly the place where King Agamemnon (the king who defeated Troy) lived. I placed it under the girl because of the way it points up. I wanted to point at the girl to try and pull the eyes up to her a little more so that the viewer would be more likely to look there first.
I put the picture of me and my boyfriend next to all the previous images for two reasons. The first is that this picture was taken at the palace of Mycenae, so I wanted it close to the images related to that. the second is that I wanted us placed on one of the thirds so that we looked more firmly on the page. I did not want us being pulled out of the frame, although we are still sliding to the bottom a little bit.
The images in the middle represent pure mythology. There is no human connection to them other than that they are characters in the myths. The horse man belongs to a myth where everyone like him came into Athens and began stealing all the women, starting a big battle. I placed in on the right of the screen so that he would appear to be moving very fast toward the left. The image above him of the horse with wings is of Pegasus. He is a character in several myths, although in this picture it is suppose to be Diana riding him. I placed him on the right of the screen so that it appears he is flying slowly to the right. The big orange and pink circle is a picture of Medusa, probably one of the best known myths. This image was originally black and white, but I changed it so that it woudl pop out of the background a little more. I made her orange because we associate orange with danger and caution, which is what was needed in Medusa's myths. I put brush strokes that looked like grass at the bottom to try and keep it all feeling real, i did not want to get too wrapped up into the fantasy portion of everything.
Lastly, the image to the far right is from a picture I took at the Temple of Delphi. It is one of the remaining columns there. I chose this because to me the temple represents an actual place that has been blown up into mythical proportions. So it kind of represents how the myths actually tie into the real world. I decided to put it as far to the right as possible because it was a big image. I have a lot of things happening that pull the eye to the left, and I wanted to try and counteract that by placing this big image somewhere where it would be pulled to the right.
