Swiss/International: This first image I feel is a good example of Swiss/International graphic design. It is a 2009 album cover from the band Muse. The design is very geometric; the sphere in the middle commands the attention. It is also minimalistic in that the only image is of the sphere in the middle; there is no other image to compete. This album cover also has a sans serif type and repeating shapes and colors, which are both characteristics of Swiss/International design. http://freakytrigger.co.uk/ft/2010/01/top-ten-album-appears-to-contains-worst-of-2009/
Psychedelic : I f
eel this image is a good example of psychedelic design for several reasons. It has many curvilinear shapes and the graphic has nothing to do with the message. In addition, the graphic is channeling the underground comic movement, which is a major characteristic of psychedelic design. Finally, the type, mainly the word in the purple at the top, is hard to read, which is also a characteristic of design from that movement.
Postmodern: The poster is an advertisement promoting a concert featuring a Hebrew jazz artist. The design is very collage-like, which is a major characteristic of design from the postmodern movement. In addition, there is several instances of decoration and ornamentation, which lends itself to the postmodern era. The image is also very expressive and playful, given the colors and decorations at the bottom. I think it also has geometric characteristics as well, because the lettering is in blocks, and the photo of the artist is also cut out in a geometric way.
Art Deco: I consider this image to be art deco because of its geometric shapes and symbols. Additionally, the overall design is fairly simple, yet it has some futuristic elements as well. The words are fairly integrated into the design, especially the 'slash' that is underneath the sword and 'justice' that can be seen on the sword pointing to the main figure in the design.
Digital: I feel t
his is a good example of digital era graphic design. The design is fairly messy and somewhat random. There is also plenty of layers in the design, which lends itself to digital era design. In addition to the layers, the photo also has texture; by layering the background, it gives a sense of movement and texture that otherwise wouldn't be there. I think the design is also pushing boundaries, as it quite complex and modern.
